There are places that seem made for Christmas, and Cape Breton Island is one of them.
By December, the brilliant colours of autumn have disappeared and the island settles into its quieter winter rhythm. The days are crisp, the evenings draw in early, and lights begin appearing in windows and around the small communities dotted along the coast. It is a very different Cape Breton from the busy days of summer and perhaps an even more special one.
Christmas here still has a wonderful sense of place. Nova Scotia is famous for its fragrant pine trees, while across the province coastal communities have developed their own distinctly Maritime festive traditions, including Christmas trees fashioned from lobster traps and fishing buoys.
On Cape Breton, the island's strong Gaelic, Acadian and Mi’kmaw cultures add to that sense of tradition and community that feels particularly appropriate at Christmas.
A Christmas made for slowing down
The real pleasure of spending Christmas on Cape Breton isn't a long itinerary of things you must do.
It's having the freedom not to have one. Wrap up warmly for a walk beside the water. Take a winter drive and discover the island without the summer crowds. Look for locally made gifts, come home with something delicious for supper, or simply spend the afternoon indoors while the weather rolls across the harbour.
And if the snow arrives, Cape Breton becomes something altogether different. Winter brings opportunities for snowy walks, snowshoeing and skiing, while places such as Cape Smokey showcase just how spectacular the island can be at this time of year. But Christmas is also about coming home.
