Cape Breton has a lot to offer when it comes to foodie experiences. From basic fare to gastronomical delights, we'll make sure you're well fed and watered. We've picked a few local spots, all within a 15 minute drive drive from Balmor Landing.
Local Cape Breton Classics
A&K Lick-A-Chick (Bras d'Or) Yes, you heard me right, Lick-A-Chick. You can't miss it, as it's right across the road from the Lick-A-treat (ice cream parlour). The A&K, as it's known by the locals, is our version of a chicken hut. Looking for a 'light' snack? Their crinkle fries and gravy are other-worldly. Dressed in 1950's style florescent strip lighting, you can't miss it from the 105 highway. (12 minute Drive)
Bette's (North Sydney) Bette's is a Balmor Landing 'go-to' as it's just minutes down the road from the house. Classic 'home cooked' meals will satisfy your every hunger. We have a distinct love affair with their classic Club & Fries. (Thank you, Jen, for making this foodie introduction. I crave it morning, noon and night.) (5 minute drive)
Ebbies Diner (Sydney Mines) Ebbies is a little further afield, located in the town of Sydney Mines. It's a classic diner with all your comfort food favourites. It has minimal restaurant seating, so we suggest you order your food to go. I have no idea how they make their burgers so delicious, but they are unbeatable (make sure to get it with onions). They also do killer milkshakes. (15 minute drive)
Jane's Restaurant & Pizzeria (Bras d'Or) This restaurant has a long history of serving locals with the best 'home cooked' meals. They also have a loyal following for their pizzeria. NB. Expect an impressive amount of cheese as a basic pizza topping.
Winnie's Food Wagon (Bras d'Or) Located on the grounds of the beautiful Arm of Gold Campground. This simple wagon draws quite a crowd, so allow 5(ish) minutes waiting time just to place your order. Once you have your food, you can use one of their many picnic benches, eat in your car, or take it back to Balmor Landing.
Fancy Pants Food
We have two local options, the Black Spoon Bistro and the Lobster Pound & Moore. Both are located in North Sydney.
Black Spoon Bistro (North Sydney) Chef Black heads this local eatery. It is located on Commercial Street. The restaurant is light, spacious and airy, so you're likely to get a table easily. The food is always delicious and reasonably priced -for a good quality offering. We recommend the lunchtime trio. You really can't go wrong with a hearty soup/salad/sandwich combo. (8 minute drive)
Lobster Pound & Moore (North Sydney) Chef Moore is a Cape Breton celebrity, whether he likes it or not. He is our Gordon Ramsey. His standard menu is always fabulous with a great specials board too. His lobster wantons are worth the drive into North Sydney, even if you're coming from Chattanooga. Book ahead, as this place is always busy. They're old school, so don't bother with websites, call them on 902-794-2992. The Lobster Pound & Moore is only open for evening service. (8 minute drive)
Wet Your Whistle
The Cellar Bar (North Sydney) Cosy little bar located in the cellar of a former bank building - a real 'hidden gem' loved by the locals. They often have fantastic live music on the weekends. Check their social media for more details. Tables must be booked for some entertainment headliners. Kyle Finney is your charming host and manager here. Make sure you say hello! (8 minute drive)
Northern Yacht Club (North Sydney) A local favourite with great live music on the weekends. Our cousin Dickie Finney can usually be found playing there. He's a crowd pleaser. (4 minute drive)
Seaview Gold Course and Country Club (Seaview Drive) Often overlooked, this place is basically on your doorstep. (2-3 minute drive)
Further Afield
There are also plenty of wonderful options in Sydney/Westmount like Flavor on the Water, Flavor19, The Dory Pub and Governors Pub & Eatery. As you wander the island, try places like Baddeck Village (45 minute drive) for The Freight Shed, Lynnwood Inn, Bitehouse and Lakeside Restaurant. Stretch your legs even further toward Margaree (60 minute drive) and you'll find The Dancing Goat (you must try their porridge bread).
Like I mentioned earlier, you won't go hungry on our island. Enjoy.
